What an image reference controls
A reference is a promise about one thing. The model does not read your intentions; it sees pixels and weighs them against your words. A clear face photo asks it to keep the face. A clear outfit photo asks it to keep the fabric and the cut. Give it one clear promise per photo and the clip has something solid to hold on to, from the first frame to the last.
Most disappointing results come from a reference that promises too much. A busy photo with a face, a pattern, a crowd and a cluttered background gives the model five things to keep, and it keeps the least important one. Crop tight, choose the photo that shows the one thing you care about, and say in the prompt what that photo is for.
